Hanging 'em up
Jul. 26th, 2009 | 08:44 pm
This'll be my last post, however I'll still check my friends list for those who haven't given up on LJ and head for greener pastures.
Anything interesting I have to say will be on Facebook.

The trick to running dual sound cards on a K8S-LA is setting the onboard audio to "enabled" rather than "auto".

THURSDAY NIGHT
MOSTLY CLOUDY IN THE EVENING
THEN BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY.
LOWS 5 TO 10 BELOW. WEST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH.
WIND CHILL VALUES AS LOW AS 20 BELOW.
For those who are not privy, due to a very loose dress code at work, the goatee is approaching record length.

HDTV Ahoy!
Jan. 8th, 2009 | 06:59 pm
So. PCHDTV card took awhile to configure. It took going to #debian on freenode, but I got it working somewhat. The problem is that the old girl can't take decoding most of the HD streams. The Radeon lacks XvMC support, so there is no MPEG-2 hardware acceleration, which means I'm stuck with the textured video via xv. Looks like that system upgrade is coming a little faster than I thought.
In addition, the antenna is rather good, but is way too bulky. I might try a cheapie from Meijer or something. Otherwise there's a nice flat one on Amazon.com. So, I have a TV antenna for sale...

Patiently awaiting the time when music (and hair) like this is back in style.

The Letter
Dec. 28th, 2008 | 04:08 pm
A few people asked about the letter I gave to my cousin in lieu of a gift that was on backorder. Since so many people liked it, here it is in its entirety:

GTA:SA
Dec. 28th, 2008 | 12:18 pm
Of the games I put on the SGE list was GTA: San Andreas. Partly because I never really played that when it came out, partly because I was under the impression it ran well under Wine. Unfortunately it doesn't at the moment, but the soundtrack brings back some memories. Oh, how I enjoyed the R&B of the early and mid-90s.
Special thanks to Radio Free San Andreas for the nice work on ripping the audio streams.

Going Silent
Dec. 12th, 2008 | 05:46 pm
Sharon at work the other day mentioned my prolific online presence. This reminded me that those of you (especially Diana/Randy/Dad/etc.) who aren't on my friends list don't get to see quite a bit of what I write. I'll have to start manually emailing you anything below board that I locked-up.
The rather amusing thing about the "google" policy at IntraVet is that some people haven't been hired based on their cypersploits. I'm not someone who's overly exciting (the worst I do is the odd cream soda at new year's), but then again I'm pretty open on the web. I don't have much to hide, I suppose.

My LPIC-1 book arrived from the library today. That's the Linux Professional Institute Certification book.
The software that came with it? Yeah, it doesn't run on Linux.
Heh.

X-Bender: Yes! I got the most! I win X-Mas!
Jul. 16th, 2008 | 02:26 pm
I'm too stupid to remember if I posted this previously and too lazy to check, but here it is:
#!/bin/bash
while [ true ]; do
lwp-request -m HEAD http://slashdot.org | head -12 | tail -1 >> futurama_quotes.txt
done
I'm sure some of you already know about X-Bender and friends, but this is the most compact and fastest way to generate some that I've found. I have noticed they've added quotes from Bender's Big Score and possibly from The Beast with a Billion Backs, but I don't know for sure since I try to block most of that movie out.
Hopefully after I finish reading my bash book from the library, I can add some pattern matching to remove duplicates. If you know how to do this, please don't tell me. I'd like to figure it out myself. :-)

Mr. Nader to the white courtesy phone, please.
I was hoping Obama wasn't going to make the customary lurch to the right that all Democrats do once they've sewn up the nomination. I'm very slowly coming to the conclusion that Obama's shtick is just that. All hat and no cattle as they say.
