So. PCHDTV card took awhile to configure. It took going to #debian on freenode, but I got it working somewhat. The problem is that the old girl can't take decoding most of the HD streams. The Radeon lacks XvMC support, so there is no MPEG-2 hardware acceleration, which means I'm stuck with the textured video via xv. Looks like that system upgrade is coming a little faster than I thought.

In addition, the antenna is rather good, but is way too bulky. I might try a cheapie from Meijer or something. Otherwise there's a nice flat one on Amazon.com. So, I have a TV antenna for sale...

The Letter

A few people asked about the letter I gave to my cousin in lieu of a gift that was on backorder. Since so many people liked it, here it is in its entirety:

Dearest Master Saylors,
You may be wondering why there is a paltry sum of only $10 in this envelope. I have an
explanation for this most meager of monetary tender.

You see, as I was trying in earnest to find a most splendid and thoughtful gift for you, the
person for whose name I drew for this year’s gift exchange, I did have some trouble. Do
not despair, sir, for I did find the most exquisite of gifts to convey to you during this
Christmastide season. However, as I attempted to procure this gift, the shopkeeper
notified me that this particular item had been in the greatest of demand and hence, his
stock was completely diminished. He explained that the best he could do was send word
by way of electronic mail when his next consignment of goods arrived and ship me this
gift of the utmost quality by professional courier. I was downright dejected to say the
least, but being that this was a man of repute, I took him at his word and made
arrangements to have this gift delivered directly to your domicile forthwith.

Now as to the bill of credit contained in the parcel accompanying this communiqué,
consider it only as a down payment and a way of showing my most sincere apologies for
the tardiness of my gift.

Most very truly yours,
Sir Nathan Alan Stine, 5th Duke of Northland

This reminded me that those of you (especially Diana/Randy/Dad/etc.) who aren't on my friends list don't get to see quite a bit of what I write. I'll have to start manually emailing you anything below board that I locked-up.

The rather amusing thing about the "google" policy at IntraVet is that some people haven't been hired based on their cypersploits. She asserts that the gentleman doesn't have the right to testify at the hearing because he doesn't believe in the Magic Man in the Sky. The jaw-dropping moment was this:

"[I]t’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!"

No shit. Because rationality is the enemy of all religion.

This is ridiculous on so many levels. And Christians think they're persecuted? Could you imagine if she had said the same thing to a Jew or Muslim? She'd be out of a job by now.

We're making inroads on helping out our GLBT friends get their rights (and thankfully we already have ours), but we need to work with them on acceptance as well.

Friends and the odd parent or two who reads this,

I'll be doing political blogging over at The Wrong Lizard. If I can roll 7s consistently for the next 2 or 3 years, I might be able to make a small living out of it. Desperate times, etc., etc. There isn't anything up yet, but I invite you to throw it in your RSS reader in case I say something interesting.

I'll do my best to keep this LJ account mostly about personal stuff, which means it'll be behind the lock more and more often.

And just to amuse me, post something here if you regularly read my journal.
